sod installationYour choices for sod installation come down to two things: Doing it yourself or having a professional take care of the job for you. When laying down sod, there are several things to keep in mind in order to do the job properly. You don’t want to have to go through the process twice.

If you’re wondering if sod installation is right for you, it is helpful to understand what sod is and how it needs to be cared for. There are some unique considerations, but the results are worth the effort because it will give you a beautiful, green lawn in no time at all.

As you undoubtedly know, sod is grass that has already been planted by seed on a farm. It is then harvested by slicing a thin layer of topsoil. These layers are either rolled or stacked and sent directly to the sod installation site. Time is of the essence here in order to keep the sod in the right shape for planting. However, if you must wait a day or two before the sod installation, you should store it in a single layer in a shady spot and keep it moist so it doesn’t dry out. Not everyone has that kind of real estate, though, so that is certainly one solid reason to contract with a professional.

Once the sod has been installed, you need to start watering immediately. For the first week to 10 days, it is important to give it just enough water to keep it from getting too dry. In our summer heat, this is especially critical.

After about 10 days, you need to allow the sod to dry out enough for mowing. With a professional lawn service like J&D Lawn Service on the job, we can take care to make sure that your sod is getting the proper attention it needs. There are certain nuances to mowing newly laid sod, so it is important to get it done right.

While there is so much more we could talk about here with regard to sod installation and care, we would much rather talk to you personally to advise you on your particular wants and needs for your yard. We are happy to come out and look at your yard and give you our professional opinion on what makes the best sense for you.
